Costa Rica

In the area most travel guides and writers call Gringo Gulch, Costa Rica bars and nightclubs range from upscale cocktail lounges that serve $4 beers, to places where the locals pay just 75 cents for a cold cerveza.

One of the most popular watering holes in San Jose for single men used to be the Hotel del Rey's Blue Marlin, which is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The watering hole at New York Bar (around the corner and down the hill) has become much more popular in the past year. So has the bar at the Hotel Presidente on Avenida Central.

Baraza Lounge - San Jose
5 out of 5
Excellent Bar and Lounge in the heart of Sabana, San José Costa Rica.
El Cuartel de la Boca del Monte
4 out of 5
This popular bar, one of San José's best, began life as an artist-and-bohemian hangout, and has evolved into the leading meat market for the young and well heeled. However, artists still come, as do foreign exchange students, visitors, and, a broad cross section of San José's youth, so there's always a diverse mix.

El Tobogán
4 out of 5
The dance floor in this place is about the size of a football field, yet it still fills up. This is a place where Ticos come with their loved ones and dance partners. The music is a mix of classic Latin dance rhythms -- salsa, cumbia, and merengue. It's open only on the weekends (till about 2am)
Playas del Coco
4 out of 5
Great place to relax and enjoy drinks.

Barba Roja – Quepos

4 out of 5

Barba Roja is a great place to have dinner and watch the sun set (you can't beat the views). If it's ladies night, the place will pick up later in the night. There's usually a cover for guys but I believe ladies drink for free all night.

Qbico - Los Yoses

3 out of 5

Qbico is pretty nice. Sure it doesn´t have the same atmosphere as the bars in escazu (gringo town), but you jus gotta know how to appreciate the costa rican way else you miss the whole point of trying new things.

Castro's

2 out of 5

This is a classic Costa Rican dance club. The music varies throughout the night, from salsa and meringue to reggaeton and occasionally electronic trance.

Copacabana

2 out of 5

This large, open, upscale disco seems to be the favored dance venue for the young and beautiful of San José. The party here is Wednesday through Saturday nights till around 4am. Admission is around $3

In all seriousness, the bars and clubs are better off to be found then told. They have good and bad seasons. So look for the great ones and let us know.

Clubs we advise avoiding include Lipstick, Alcasar, Kamur, Elite and Hollywood
